Assisted living to help our clients age in place.

The Excel Society currently has two DAL facilities, Grand Manor and Balwin Villa with 118 and 105 suites respectively.

Balwin Villa

6920 – 128 Avenue, Edmonton, AB

The Balwin Villa is a 105 suite Enhanced Designated Living site designed specifically for clients with early onset dementia, mental illness or brain injury. Owned and operated by the Excel Society, the facility is located at 6920 – 128 Avenue in Edmonton and opened in the fall of 2010.

Set in a mature neighbourhood, the project involved redevelopment of an existing facility, the North Edmonton School. The exterior of the original building was preserved in the remodelling. Besides the two school buildings, a third new structure was added to the site. The complex includes a theatre/gymnasium that is available to the client-residents and the local community. The buildings are surrounded by an outdoor recreation area operated by the City of Edmonton.

Balwin Villa has 104 residents and we serve a variety of populations; including dementia care, mental health, brain injury and addictions. The main focus is on person-centered care where we empower our residents to be part of their care and encouraged them to remain as independent as possible. We have 3 dementia units and 4 Mental Health units that provide the option to live in separated gender specific units. We have recently collaborated with Alberta Health to open a Recovery Transition Unit that will focus on skill development for those resident to one-day transition into a community setting.
